American Art Lecture
Summer Series
The Cahoon Museum of American Art continues its exciting lecture series on the history of American art by museum director Dr. Robert Gambone with a program titled "Shining Lights: Painting of Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent." This will be an evening series, 5:30-6:45 p.m., August 5, 12 and 19 (consecutive Tuesday evenings) in Bruce Hall at the Cotuit Federated Church. The cost is $50 for members, $60 for nonmembers. The fee for single sessions is $20, depending upon availability. Space is limited. Summer Children's Art SeriesChildren may register for a singe class or sign up for all three. Classes are taught by Museum art coordinator Alison McMurry, who also heads up the Museum's get smART! art program for kids.
Make a Sailor's Valentine Class - ages 8-12
July 23 and 24, 10:00 a.m until 12:00 noon each day - $100
Children will first look at examples of sailors' valentines from the museum's collection, then, working with a Beauty from the Beach Kit as a guide, carefully plan out their design during the first class. On day two, children will make their valentines with shells, paper, and glue. All materials are included.Cape Cod Photography Class - ages 12-14
July 9 and July 16, 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. each day - $100
During the first class children will taker a guided tour of the museum's photography show, "The Past as Present: Vintage Photographs of Samuel Chamberlain" as they learn about composition, color, shadow, line, and elements that make a good photograph. Following this first class, each student will be provided with a disposable digital camera and given a one week assignment to shoot a favorite cape cod scene, have the film developed, and select their favorite photograph. For the second class, students will return with their favorite photograph and they will be matted and displayed. Students will then discuss their work under the guidance of an art instructor. All materials, including disposable digital camera are included.Sketching in the Galleries - ages 8-12
August 12, and August 19, 10:00-11:30 a.m. each day. - $100
During the first class children will be taken on a guided tour of the special exhibition, "At Home in America: 19th Century Genre Painting," as they learn about and discuss what home and family life was like in 19th century America. Each students will be given a sketch pad and colored pencils and will follow-up the tour with a sketching session in the galleries. Students will then be sent home with their pads and pencils and asked to sketch a favorite scene at home. During the second class, students will return with their notebook sketches and will enjoy a "show and tell" with each child given they opportunity to talk about their own work. All materials including sketching pads and color pencils are included.h Carving and painting a decorative Goldfinch Workshop

Steve Weaver of Wakeby Wildlife Studio in Forestdale, highly regarded for his concern with authenticity and attention to detail will presents a weekend-long carving seminar. You'll learn how to shape a songbird from roughcut out to the setting of the eyes. Students will also paint and mount their carving. The class includes all materials necessary to complete the project. Limited to16 participants.

Folk Painting Class with Janet Munro
Monday - Wednesday, August 4,5 and 6
member: $100, nonmember: $120, plus a materials fee of $23
An exciting three-day seminar where you will create a landscape titled "Winter on Cape Cod" (see above) in the style of an American folk artist. The class will discuss color, balance, drawing, mixing colors, composition, and finishing detail. You will learn to use brushes, create with paint, and leave with a finished painting. Limited to 15, so register early!
